La pittoresque rue des Chandeliers semble monter à l’assaut de quelque Butte Montmartre. Mais au bout de cent mètres, un escalier la hisse en un dernier effort au niveau de la rue des Minimes.
Il s’agit d’une des plus anciennes ruelles des abords de la rue Haute. Elle est déjà mentionnée en 1349 dans un document des Archives de Ste Gudule, sous le nom flamand de Candelaersstraat. Certains livres censaux la nomment aussi Kandelaarsberg (ou berch). On a pu croire qu’elle était habitée jadis par des fabricants de chandelles et que c’est par erreur qu’on lui a donné le nom de “Chandeliers” au lieu de “Faiseurs de chandelles”. Mais nous n’avons trouvé aucun document justifiant cette hypothèse.
